Central Silk Board to Commemorate its Platinum Jubilee on September 20, 2024

Bengaluru: The Central Silk Board (CSB) is celebrating its 75th anniversary on September 20, 2024, with events held across India. Established on April 9, 1949, under the Central Silk Board Act of 1948, the CSB was initially headquartered in Delhi, later moved to Bombay in 1953, and has been based in Bangalore since 1981 due to Karnataka's prominent role in sericulture.

In Regard to this The Central Silk Board(CBS) held the Press meet at the Press Club on Wednesday.

The CSB consists of 39 members, including six Members of Parliament, appointed for three-year terms. Its responsibilities include research and development, overseeing a silkworm seed production network, and setting quality standards for the silk industry.

Currently, CSB operates 159 units nationwide, including nine main research institutes. To mark its Platinum Jubilee, major events will take place in Mysore and Bengaluru on September 20 and 21, respectively. The Union Minister of Textiles, Shri Giriraj Singh, will attend the Bengaluru event along with other dignitaries.

Notable achievements of the CSB include:

- India’s silk production has grown from 6% of global output in 1949-50 to 42% in 2023-24.

- Raw silk yarn production has increased from 1,242 MT in 1949-50 to 38,913 MT in 2023-24.

- Silk exports rose from ₹0.41 crore in 1949-50 to ₹2,028 crore in 2023-24.

- The mulberry plantation area expanded from 0.57 lakh hectares to 2.63 lakh hectares.

- Raw silk productivity improved from 15 kg/ha in 1949-50 to 110 kg/ha in 2023-24.

The upcoming stakeholder meet will feature the release of a commemorative coin, launch of new technologies, and distribution of awards. The event will be held at the Dr. Babu Rajendra Prasad International Convention Centre, Bengaluru, and will include discussions on expanding the mulberry plantation and engaging with entrepreneurs in the sericulture sector.
