Urban Flooding Nightmare: Vanishing Lakes Amplify Risk, Guwahati Shines as Flood-Free Model!

In the present scenario, urban flooding is a significant problem. As cities continue to develop through urbanization, many lakes have become buried under the soil, giving rise to the construction of luxurious compartment roads and buildings. Consequently, this situation leads to the mixing of sewage water and stormwater, posing a significant risk to both humans and animals. Taking Bangalore and Hyderabad as examples, 65 lakes have been lost since 1965 and 231 lakes since 1929, respectively. To address such issues, it is imperative to implement alternative sustainable development goals. One effective measure is the construction of separate stormwater drains to prevent urban flooding. Surprisingly, 65 percent of cities in India have yet to adopt this master plan. However, Guwahati has successfully implemented a flood-free mission, making it an ideal role model for other cities to develop their own models to tackle urban flooding.
