Mumbai: Ratan Tata, the 86-year-old former chairman of the Tata Group, passed away at Breach Candy Hospital due to age-related ailments. The Tata Group confirmed the news in an official statement.
Tata led the nearly $130-billion conglomerate from March 1991 to December 2012, after succeeding his predecessor, JRD Tata. He continued as chairman emeritus of Tata Sons after stepping down.
Earlier in the week, Tata had dismissed rumors about his health, assuring the public in a post on X that he was undergoing routine check-ups for age-related conditions and that there was no cause for concern.
During his 22-year leadership, the Tata Group expanded globally through significant acquisitions, including Tetley Tea in 2000, Corus Steel in 2007, and Jaguar Land Rover in 2008. These moves made the Tata Group a major player in international markets, notably becoming the largest employer in the UK’s manufacturing sector.
In addition to its acquisitions, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) grew to become India’s largest software company under his leadership, employing over 600,000 people globally and driving significant profits for the group.
Tata was widely respected for his leadership and philanthropy, leaving a lasting legacy on both the business world and broader society.
