Leadership Discussions Intensify as Party Returns to Power After 26 Years

New Delhi: Following its decisive win in the Delhi Assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is deliberating on its choice for the chief ministerial post. With 48 out of 70 seats, the party has ended its 26-year-long wait to form the government, reducing the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) to 22 seats.

Sources indicate that BJP is considering a woman candidate from its newly elected MLAs. Discussions are also underway about appointing a deputy chief minister from a socially representative background. A senior party leader suggested that factors such as regional representation, political strategy, and past electoral trends in other states could influence the final decision.

Among the prominent women contenders, Rekha Gupta (Shalimar Bagh MLA) is a key name. She serves as the national vice president of BJP’s women’s wing and secured her seat with a margin of 29,595 votes. Shikha Roy (Greater Kailash MLA) is another strong candidate, having won against AAP’s Saurabh Bharadwaj. Poonam Sharma (Wazirpur MLA), Neelam Pehalwan (Najafgarh MLA), Smriti Irani, and Bansuri Swaraj are also in the fray.

If a woman is chosen, she would join a short list of female chief ministers in Delhi’s history, including Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi. The swearing-in ceremony is expected to take place after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s return from his US visit, with chief ministers from all NDA-ruled states likely to attend.
