Opposition seeks special parliamentary session to review developments since Pahalgam terror attack
New Delhi: Following the announcement of an immediate ceasefire between India and Pakistan, the Congress party has called for an all-party meeting under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, urging the government to take political parties into confidence on the security situation post the Pahalgam terror attack.
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a social media post on Saturday, stressed that the ceasefire deal—confirmed by US President Donald Trump—necessitates greater transparency and political unity.
"The need for Prime Minister Modi to convene an all-party meeting is greater than ever," Ramesh stated.
"There is now a strong case for a special session of Parliament to deliberate on the events of the past 18 days."
The demand comes hours after President Trump tweeted that both India and Pakistan had agreed to halt hostilities following US-mediated talks, a development that has sparked cautious optimism in the global diplomatic community.
Ceasefire Terms Announced:
At a press briefing shortly after Trump’s statement, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri confirmed that talks were held between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both nations.
They agreed to a full cessation of hostilities by land, air, and sea, effective 5 PM IST on May 10.
“This ceasefire is immediate and unconditional,” Misri said, adding that India remains firm on its stance against terrorism and cross-border infiltration.
Background:
The ceasefire comes 18 days after the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of 12 Indian soldiers and triggered a series of cross-border skirmishes, including Operation Sindoor by the Indian Army and retaliatory shelling by Pakistan.
In the wake of these developments, political voices across the spectrum have called for greater transparency and national unity, especially with tensions still simmering along the LoC and IB sectors.
