Main and Service Roads to be Integrated Across 50 Km Stretch from Hebbal to Silk Board to Decongest City Arteries

Bengaluru: In a major move aimed at decongesting Bengaluru’s overburdened roads during ongoing metro construction, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar conducted a surprise inspection on Monday and announced that main roads and service roads will be merged across key stretches to ensure smoother traffic flow.

Accompanied by MLA Anekal Shivanna, the DCM inspected Mahadevapura and Marathahalli flyovers, which fall on the crucial metro corridor from Hebbal Junction to Silk Board, a route heavily impacted by metro construction activity.

“Metro work is using up large portions of the main road, leaving little space for vehicles. To address this, we are merging the main and service roads to ensure seamless movement.”
DCM D.K. Shivakumar stated during his inspection.

The move comes after the recent Greater Bengaluru meeting, where officials discussed the mounting congestion on roads due to metro work. A collective decision was made to remove road dividers between the main and service roads along a 40–50 km stretch across the city.

“Discussions have already been held with Bengaluru MLAs, and their suggestions have been included in the plan.”
He added, reaffirming the government’s commitment to citizen-centric urban planning.

With most of the main carriageways occupied by metro rail infrastructure, service roads are often choked, forcing commuters into bottlenecks during peak hours. The decision to merge these roads is expected to provide immediate traffic relief while the larger metro infrastructure progresses.

This proactive inspection and intervention by the DCM highlights the urgency with which the government is tackling urban traffic woes in India’s tech capital, especially on routes that witness thousands of vehicle movements every hour.
