Coastal Karnataka’s peace must be protected; government vows strict action as Rao urges BJP not to incite communal tension

Bengaluru, May 2: Karnataka Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao has expressed deep concern over the murder of Suhas Shetty in the coastal region, stating that while the incident may seem like the result of old enmity, there are indications that the underlying motive may be to disturb communal harmony in the region.

“I am personally disturbed by the murder,” Rao said after a meeting with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, stressing that the government is treating the matter with utmost seriousness. “If serial killings become the norm, where will society go?” he asked.

He made it clear that there will be no leniency or appeasement in this case. “There is no question of protecting the perpetrators for any reason. I have already received inputs from police officers and instructed them to take stern action,” he said.

Rao also confirmed that senior officials have reached the site of the murder and that the Chief Minister and Home Minister are closely monitoring the situation. He urged the opposition BJP to act responsibly and refrain from politicising the tragedy.

One word to the BJP: Don’t do politics on a dead body. You too are responsible for maintaining law and order,” he said. He warned against spreading hatred or inciting unrest in Mangaluru, and appealed for restraint and cooperation in restoring peace.

Rao further questioned the selective outrage, pointing out that the murder of Ashraf earlier did not evoke similar political reaction. “Suhas and Ashraf are both the same to us. A murder is a murder. We must treat every victim equally, regardless of religion,” he said.
