Motorcyclist Escapes Death by Inches in Ujire as Rain, Thunder and Wind Wreak Havoc Across Taluk

Beltangady: A sudden and intense spell of rain, thunder, and strong winds wreaked havoc across several parts of Beltangady taluk on the evening of April 30, causing widespread property damage and leaving locals scrambling for safety.

In a frightening incident in Ujire, a large tree was uprooted and came crashing down on a moving motorcycle on the college road. The two-wheeler was completely destroyed, but the rider, Amit from Neera Chilume, had a miraculous escape, sustaining no injuries.

Locals have criticized MESCOM, alleging that unscientific pruning of tree branches contributed to the tree collapse. “If proper measures were taken, this could have been avoided,” said a resident.

In another storm-related accident, a coconut tree fell on the house of Vanitha Shetty in Putra Bailu, Layila, causing major damage to the roof.

The storm also crippled the power infrastructure, with over 10 electric poles collapsing in the MESCOM Ujire sub-division, leading to power outages in multiple areas.

Rainfall had already been reported on April 29, but the April 30 storm was significantly more severe, raising concerns about weather preparedness in the region as the pre-monsoon season intensifies.
