Waterlogged Basement Turns Deadly: Another Wake-Up Call for Rain-Hit City

Bengaluru: A horrifying rain-induced tragedy has shaken Bengaluru once again. Amid heavy showers, a 61-year-old man and a 12-year-old boy were electrocuted to death while attempting to pump out water from the flooded basement of an apartment complex in NS Palya, BTM Layout Second Stage.

The victims have been identified as Manohar Kamath (61) and Dinesh (12). The incident occurred around 6:30 PM on Sunday evening at Madhuvan Apartments, where torrential rain had caused severe waterlogging in the basement.

“Both had gone to operate a motor to clear the accumulated rainwater when they were electrocuted,” police sources confirmed.

Myco Layout Police Barricade the Site | Power Supply Cut Off Immediately

Soon after the tragic incident, the Myco Layout police arrived at the scene and barricaded the entire apartment complex to prevent further danger. As a precautionary measure, Bescom authorities disconnected the electricity supply to Madhuvan Apartments.

The bodies of the victims were recovered and further investigation is currently underway to determine whether faulty wiring or water seepage into electrical units was responsible for the electrocution.

🗣️ “The city’s rainwater mismanagement is proving fatal. It’s not just about inconvenience anymore — it’s about life and death,” lamented a resident who witnessed the tragedy.

Bengaluru's Urban Flooding Nightmare Continues…

This incident once again exposes Bengaluru’s deep-rooted urban infrastructure crisis, especially during the pre-monsoon spell. Despite repeated assurances from civic authorities and the government, dangerous waterlogging, open wires, and unsafe basements remain unchecked.

❝How many lives must be lost before action is taken?❞ – A local resident demanded answers, as public anger simmers across the flood-hit city.

Just days ago, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar claimed that 70% of the city’s water-logging problems had been solved, and stormwater drain work is underway. However, such incidents raise serious questions about ground-level implementation.

Shocking Silence from Authorities: Who’s Responsible for Safety?

While the city drowns, residents are left asking:

Who inspects the safety of motors and electrical systems in basements?
> Why are rain preparedness and building compliance protocols not strictly enforced?

This Is Not an Isolated Incident…

This tragedy is not the first time Bengaluru’s rainwater mismanagement has turned fatal:

  • In 2022, a woman was electrocuted in KR Circle due to a live electric pole submerged in water.

  • Frequent complaints about flooded basements, faulty wiring, and clogged drains go unresolved.

Urgent Need for Accountability & Reform

This horrific event at Madhuvan Apartments is a blaring siren for the BBMP, BESCOM, and the Karnataka Government to wake up and enforce emergency safety inspections, proper drainage, and electrical safety audits across the city.

❝It’s not enough to speak in press conferences. We need lives to be protected on the ground, not just in paperwork,❞ said a civic activist.
