City Stunned by Violent Arson in Bapuji Layout, Doctor’s Watchman Injured, Car Torched, Office Cameras Damaged; Shocking Repeat Attack Linked to Earlier Incident
Bengaluru: In a chilling act of premeditated arson, four helmet-clad miscreants stormed into the residence of a well-known local doctor in Vijayanagar’s Bapuji Layout and set the house ablaze just after midnight last Friday. The city, already witnessing a rise in street crime, was rocked by the shocking incident that endangered lives and caused massive property damage.
The victim, Gangadhar, was targeted by four men who arrived on two motorcycles around 12:20 AM, carrying petrol cans and wearing full-face helmets to avoid identification. In a matter of minutes, the miscreants poured petrol and set fire to the house, the premises, and even the doctor’s MG Hector car parked nearby.
"It was like a war zone. Everything was on fire. I don’t know why this happened to us," a neighbour reportedly told local media.
Tragically, Dr Thyagaraju, the watchman at the residence, sustained severe injuries during the attack. He is currently undergoing treatment. Authorities estimate a total loss of over ₹45 lakh, including the burning of the car, destruction of office surveillance cameras, and structural damage to the home.
“The brutality of this attack is beyond comprehension. This wasn’t just mischief — it was an orchestrated act of terror,” an official from Chandra Layout Police Station commented.
A case has been registered, and investigations are underway. Police suspect the incident may be linked to an earlier arson attack — where the Acurela Farm, reportedly run by Dr Gangadhar’s son, was also set on fire by unidentified individuals. That case was filed at Govindaraja Nagar Police Station.
"This appears to be a targeted campaign of destruction. We are exploring every possible angle — personal enmity, business rivalry, or land disputes," said a senior police officer close to the probe.
Locals are now expressing fear and concern over the alarming rise in organised hooliganism in Bengaluru's residential areas. With two violent attacks targeting the same family, pressure is mounting on law enforcement to crack the case and bring the perpetrators to justice.
“This could happen to any of us. If doctors and respected residents aren't safe in their homes, who is?” said a resident from Bapuji Layout.
