Incident at Prestigious Nitte Engineering College Sparks Outrage; Case Registered, CCTV Footage Under Review

Udupi: Tension gripped the Nitte campus in Karkala taluk after provocative and obscene slogans targeting religious communities were found written on the bathroom wall of a women’s hostel in a reputed engineering college. The incident, which occurred on May 7, has prompted a swift police investigation.

According to officials, the offensive writings in English, discovered in the main block's hostel bathroom, appeared to have been deliberately written to incite communal sentiments. The hostel manager immediately alerted the authorities, following which a formal complaint was filed.

The Karkala Rural Police have registered a case under Section 353(2) of the Indian Penal Code, and investigations are underway to trace the individual responsible.

“A case has been registered, and we are in the process of identifying the accused,” confirmed Udupi District Superintendent of Police Arun K. He added that CCTV footage is being reviewed, and students are being questioned as part of the probe.

Preliminary findings suggest that a student may be involved, though the college administration has not yet issued an official statement.

The incident has sparked concern among parents and students alike, with calls for strict disciplinary action and enhanced surveillance in hostels. Authorities have assured that the matter is being treated with utmost seriousness.
