Calls for strict action against college management and urgent anti-ragging reforms across campuses

Bengaluru: A shocking case of suicide allegedly caused by ragging has shaken the student community and civil society in Bengaluru. The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO), Bengaluru District Committee, has expressed deep anguish and anger following the tragic death of a 2nd year engineering student in a private college located in Bagaluru, North Bengaluru.

The deceased, C. Arun, aged 21, hailed from Hassan district and was the son of daily wage workers. According to initial reports, Arun took the extreme step due to continuous ragging, highlighting the persistent menace of campus harassment and institutional failure to prevent it.

Failure of College Authorities Under Scrutiny

AIDSO has sharply criticised the college administration’s failure to implement effective anti-ragging measures despite existing guidelines from the University Grants Commission (UGC) and Supreme Court directives.

"This heart-wrenching incident once again exposes the failure of college authorities to curb ragging and create a safe and inclusive campus environment," said an AIDSO representative.

The organisation called it “condemnable” that even in today’s age, students are being forced to live in fear, instead of focusing on their education and development.

Demands for Accountability and Reforms

AIDSO has demanded:

  • An immediate and impartial investigation into the incident

  • Strict punishment for all individuals found responsible

  • Accountability of the college management

  • Effective implementation of anti-ragging laws in all educational institutions

  • Student-friendly reporting mechanisms for abuse and harassment

"We urge the government to act swiftly and ensure that campuses are safe spaces, not breeding grounds for fear and violence," the statement read.

Call to Student Community

Beyond legal and administrative demands, AIDSO has made an emotional appeal to the student community across Karnataka and India to rise in unity against ragging and foster a healthier academic culture.

"AIDSO calls upon the student community to unite against ragging and build a campus culture based on friendship, solidarity, and mutual respect."

The incident has once again underlined the urgent need for institutional reforms, proactive counselling, and campus surveillance mechanisms to prevent such tragic outcomes.
