AIDSO calls the Chief Minister’s endorsement a progressive step; Reiterates the importance of mother tongue and English in holistic student development

Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Committee of the All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) has welcomed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s recent statement endorsing a two-language policy in the state’s education system. The student body has long advocated for a bilingual approach, focusing on the mother tongue and English, which they believe is critical for the intellectual and cultural development of students across Karnataka.

The Chief Minister made the announcement during a public program, sparking positive responses from several academic and student communities. For AIDSO, this is a “significant and positive step” in the direction they have consistently championed.

"When a child learns in their native language, it significantly enhances their capacity for understanding and conceptualisation. It fosters deeper cognitive development, facilitates a more natural grasp of complex ideas, and strengthens their ability to think critically," the AIDSO Karnataka committee stated in a release.

AIDSO further emphasised that a solid foundation in the mother tongue not only improves academic learning but also cultivates a strong cultural identity and heritage consciousness. However, they also stressed the indispensable role of English in contemporary education.

"While a robust foundation in the mother tongue is essential, English serves as an indispensable window to global knowledge. Proficiency in English is needed for accessing a vast reservoir of information, engaging in international academic and scientific discourse," the statement added.

Highlighting historical precedence, AIDSO pointed out that great Kannada litterateurs like Kuvempu had also supported the two-language formula for Karnataka, underlining its cultural and educational relevance.

The organisation commended the Chief Minister’s public commitment to this bilingual policy and called for its rational and uniform implementation across all educational institutions in Karnataka. AIDSO also expressed hope that this initiative will strengthen both cultural roots and global competence for the youth of the state.
