Ramanagara tragedy unfolds in the early hours; the deceased is identified as a resident of Hassan returning to Bengaluru after attending a family function

Bengaluru: In a tragic accident that occurred in the early hours of Sunday, three individuals lost their lives instantly when the car they were travelling in crashed into a retaining wall on the Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, near Jayapura Gate in Ramanagara taluk. The high-speed impact resulted in immediate fatalities for all but one passenger, who remains in critical condition.

“The accident was severe and the vehicle was extensively damaged. The impact indicates the car was moving at a considerable speed. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway,” said an officer from the Ramanagara Traffic Police, who visited the scene shortly after the incident.

The deceased have been identified as Thammannagowda (56), his son Muthuraj (28), and their driver Sachin (27), all hailing from Hassan. The lone survivor, Sanju, sustained critical injuries and was immediately rushed to a private hospital in Bengaluru for urgent medical treatment.

According to initial police reports, the group was returning to Bengaluru after attending a personal event at Madavinakodi village when the accident took place.

"It was a shocking scene. The car had rammed headlong into the retaining wall, indicating either a misjudgment by the driver or possible drowsiness due to early morning fatigue," noted a local eyewitness who arrived moments after the crash.

Authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident, considering factors like overspeeding, drowsy driving, or mechanical failure. The Ramanagara Traffic Police have filed a case and are in the process of recording statements and retrieving CCTV footage from the expressway stretch.

Background of the Expressway

The Bengaluru-Mysuru Expressway, a high-speed corridor that has seen a surge in vehicular movement since its opening, has witnessed multiple accidents in recent months, often attributed to overspeeding and poor night-time visibility. Despite several advisories and patrol checks, fatal incidents like this highlight the need for heightened road safety measures.

Current Status

  • Victims: Thammannagowda (56), Muthuraj (28), Sachin (27) – deceased

  • Injured: Sanju – critical condition

  • Location: Jayapura Gate, Ramanagara Taluk

  • Action Taken: Case registered; injured admitted to private hospital in Bengaluru

"Speed limits, clear lane markings, and more frequent patrols are necessary to curb such tragedies," said a transport safety expert reacting to the accident.
