At Bhubaneswar rally, Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi accuses the BJP of undermining the Constitution, misusing the Election Commission, and serving capitalist interests
Bhubaneswar: In a scathing attack on the BJP, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Friday alleged that the ruling party is attempting to "hijack the upcoming assembly elections in Bihar", drawing parallels with what he described as similar political manipulation in Maharashtra.
Speaking at the ‘Samvidhan Bachao Samavesh’ rally organised by the Congress in Bhubaneswar, Gandhi claimed that the India Bloc has resolved to prevent any such political sabotage in Bihar, where assembly elections are scheduled later this year.
“Like Maharashtra, there are attempts to hijack the elections in Bihar as well. The BJP is attacking our Constitution across the country,” said Rahul Gandhi, addressing a charged crowd of supporters and party workers.
The Congress leader's remarks come just a day after a strategic meeting of the India Bloc parties, where leaders from opposition parties discussed upcoming electoral strategies and coordination.
“At the India Bloc meeting on Thursday, it was decided to prevent the BJP from hijacking the elections in Bihar,” Gandhi reiterated, emphasising the bloc’s commitment to safeguarding democratic processes and institutions.
Election Commission Accused of Bias
Rahul Gandhi did not mince words when criticising the Central Election Commission, accusing it of functioning as a political tool for the BJP rather than acting as an independent constitutional body.
“The Election Commission is not performing its duty. It is working in the interests of the BJP,” he alleged, calling for greater accountability from constitutional authorities.
Gandhi's statement reflects growing concerns among opposition leaders about the impartiality of electoral processes in India, especially in light of recent controversies surrounding electoral bonds, the appointment of Election Commissioners, and alleged misuse of central agencies.
BJP Running Government for 'Five-Six Capitalists': Rahul Gandhi
In a familiar line of criticism, Gandhi once again alleged that the BJP-led central government is serving the interests of a handful of industrialists, rather than focusing on the welfare of ordinary citizens.
“The BJP is running the government for five-six capitalists. They are not working for the common people of this country,” said the Congress MP, reinforcing his narrative of crony capitalism and economic inequality under the Modi regime.
Rahul Gandhi has frequently accused the central government of favouring major corporate entities, and on Friday, he reiterated that such practices are damaging India’s democracy and economy.
India Bloc’s United Stand for Constitution and Democracy
The India Bloc, a coalition of opposition parties formed to counter the BJP in national and state-level politics, has been emphasising its commitment to protecting the Constitution, restoring democratic values, and ensuring fair elections.
Rahul Gandhi's statements in Bhubaneswar mark the beginning of what many analysts believe will be an intensely contested Bihar assembly election, with the opposition seeking to unite its voter base and prevent political defections or backdoor power shifts.
