Kubera Dharma Nayak, 49, Allegedly Ends Life Near Kamalashile Bridge; Loan Pressure Linked to Tragic Incident
Udupi: In a deeply disturbing incident from Udupi district, Kubera Dharma Nayak, a 49-year-old government school principal, was found dead on Tuesday morning in what police suspect to be a case of suicide due to mounting financial stress.
Nayak, popularly known in the community as Kuberappa, was serving as the headmaster of Sulgod Government Higher Primary School in Hallihole village. His body was found hanging from a tree using a raincoat near the Kamalashile Bridge, after he reportedly parked his scooter close by.
Career Spanning Over Two Decades Ends in Tragedy
Originally from Chitradurga, Nayak had been working in the Education Department since 2002 and had recently been promoted to the post of headmaster in 2022. He was residing with his wife and three daughters in Hosangady Government Quarters, said police sources.
According to investigators, financial debts, including those stemming from a chit fund loan, may have driven him to take this extreme step.
"A loan-related document was recently submitted to the Byndoor Zonal Education Office. This may have added to his mental pressure," said a senior police official who is part of the inquiry.
Community in Shock; Police Launch Full Investigation
The incident has sent shockwaves through the teaching fraternity and local community, with several teachers and members of the Primary School Teachers Association visiting the scene along with Byndoor Zonal Education Office officials.
A case has been officially registered at the Shankaranarayana Police Station based on a complaint filed by the deceased’s wife. Authorities are now conducting a full investigation into the nature and extent of Nayak’s financial liabilities.
"He was a sincere and well-loved teacher. This is an irreparable loss for his students and colleagues," said a fellow teacher at the Sulgod School.
A Grim Reminder of the Financial Strain on Educators
The incident once again raises concerns over the financial vulnerabilities of public servants, particularly in rural educational institutions. The pressures of debt, combined with limited income sources, are reportedly becoming a growing concern among teaching staff in Karnataka.
Teachers' associations have called for financial counselling services, mental health support, and debt assistance programs for government employees, especially those in remote postings.
