Former Union Minister Steps Back Into the Role of Tulsi; First Look Goes Viral, Sparking Social Media Buzz

Mumbai: Former Union Minister Smriti Irani is all set to make a grand comeback to television after nearly two decades. Known to millions of Indians as Tulsi Veerwani, the iconic face of Indian television in the early 2000s, Smriti will once again grace the small screen in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi Season 2’, rekindling a legacy that once ruled Indian households.

“Both media and public policy are powerful platforms. Each requires a different kind of commitment,” said Smriti, reflecting on her 25-year journey across television and politics.

Smriti’s performance as Tulsi in the original ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’, produced by Ekta Kapoor, was a turning point in Indian television. Premiering on Star Plus on July 3, 2000, the show ran successfully for over 1,800 episodes before ending on November 6, 2008. It dominated TRP charts and held the No. 1 position for seven consecutive years, becoming a cultural phenomenon.

Now, with Season 2 in the works, expectations are soaring. The first look of Smriti Irani in her comeback avatar has gone viral—a traditional housewife look, complete with a red bindi and black-beaded mangalsutra, signalling a faithful continuation of the beloved character.

Politics to Primetime: Smriti’s Comeback Sparks Speculations

Smriti Irani’s return to television follows her defeat in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections from Amethi, where she lost to Kishori Lal Sharma, a loyalist of the Sonia Gandhi family, by a margin of over 1.5 lakh votes. She had earlier defeated Rahul Gandhi in the same constituency in 2019, marking one of the most dramatic electoral victories in recent memory.

Her re-entry into acting has sparked speculations that she might be taking a political break ahead of the 2029 general elections. While she has not confirmed any such decision, her return to television certainly signals a shift in her public engagement.

Revival Talks Were Long Pending

Smriti revealed that discussions around reviving the series had begun as early as 2014, but she had to turn down the opportunity due to her entry into politics and subsequent responsibilities as a Union Minister, holding various significant portfolios between 2014 and 2024.

Now, in 2025, fans will once again see her return to the small screen where it all began.

“I have operated in two spheres of influence—television and politics. Now, it's time to reconnect with the audience differently,” she said.

Industry Buzz and Fan Anticipation

The announcement of Season 2 has created a wave of excitement across the television industry. The nostalgia surrounding Tulsi Veerwani’s return is being widely shared online, with fans eager to see how the storyline unfolds in the modern era. With Ekta Kapoor once again at the helm, and Smriti back in the central role, television ratings are expected to see a significant spike.
