College Terminates Contractual Staff Monojit Mishra and Expels Two Students Following Governing Body Meeting; Campus Security Agency Also Under Scrutiny

Kolkata: Amid widespread public anger over the alleged gang rape of a 24-year-old student, the South Calcutta Law College has expelled three accused individuals, including a contractual employee, following an emergency meeting of its governing body chaired by Trinamool Congress MLA Ashok Kumar Deb.

The main accused, Monojit Mishra, a former student-turned-contractual staffer, has had his services terminated with immediate effect, while co-accused students Jaib Ahmed and Pramit Mukherjee have also been expelled from the institution, an official confirmed.

“It has been decided to terminate Mishra's services, and the other two students will be expelled with immediate effect. The security agency assigned to the college will also be held responsible.”
said Ashok Kumar Deb, addressing reporters after the meeting.

All Three Accused in Police Custody Till July 1

The Kolkata Police have arrested all three accused, who have been remanded to police custody till July 1 as investigations continue. The incident, reportedly taking place on the college premises, has sparked intense calls for campus safety reforms and institutional accountability.

According to the college’s vice-principal, Mishra had been recruited on a contractual basis just 45 days ago, raising questions about the vetting process for campus appointments.

History of Violence: Mishra's Troubled Background

College records and testimonies reveal that Monojit Mishra has a disturbing history of violence and misconduct:

  • In 2013, he was dismissed from the college for allegedly stabbing a youth near Chetla Bridge under Kalighat police station limits.

  • He absconded from police at the time and resurfaced in 2017, eventually rejoining the college in 2022.

  • In December 2016, he was accused of leading outsiders to vandalize the college campus. FIRs and counter-FIRs were filed at Kasba Police Station, but the cases were mysteriously dropped.

“Despite repeated offences, Mishra retained influence within the institution, thanks to his close ties with the **Trinamool Congress Chhatra Parishad (TMCP),”
said Titas Manna, a former student, in an interview with a local news channel.

Campus Security Also Under Fire

The college administration also announced that the private security agency responsible for the campus will be held accountable for its failure to prevent such a serious breach.

Student and civil society groups have intensified demands for:

  • A thorough audit of hiring practices,

  • Background checks for all campus staff,

  • Installation of CCTV cameras and emergency alert systems,

  • Independent internal complaint mechanisms to protect students.

Public Pressure Mounts for Justice and Reform

The incident has triggered massive public outrage, especially across social media platforms, where students and women’s rights activists have raised concerns about safety in educational institutions.

The police investigation is ongoing, and further developments are awaited.
