Banashankari and Ashoknagar Police Crack Down on Online Harassment of Women
Bengaluru: In a swift crackdown on digital harassment, the Banashankari police have arrested Gurdeep Singh for allegedly recording and sharing obscene photos and videos of women and girls on social media without their consent.
The arrest follows a young woman's flagging of the content and her tagging of the police in a complaint. Acting on this, the Banashankari police filed a suo motu case and took Singh into custody.
"He used to post obscene photos and videos of girls and women on social platforms. We acted swiftly based on the complaint to ensure this does not go unchecked," said an investigating officer from Banashankari Police Station.
Another Youth Nabbed for Reposting the Same Content
In a separate but connected incident, Ashoknagar police arrested a 19-year-old named Hussain for downloading and reposting the same explicit videos originally shared by Gurdeep Singh.
The videos were uploaded on an Instagram page named ‘Dilbar Jani’, where they were captioned and circulated under the label ‘Bengaluru Nightlife’, further degrading the content and reaching a wider audience.
"The video originally captured by Gurdeep Singh was re-shared under misleading tags, causing further harm. We have arrested the individual responsible," confirmed a senior official from Ashoknagar Police.
Both Cases Registered, Investigation Ongoing
Police sources confirmed that separate FIRs have been registered at Banashankari and Ashoknagar police stations, respectively. Both accused are in custody and are being interrogated for further leads, including digital trail tracking and analysis of follower engagement.
Authorities are also probing whether more individuals or pages are involved in circulating such content, and if similar content was monetised or distributed beyond Instagram.
Zero Tolerance Towards Online Harassment, Say Police
Bengaluru Police reiterated that online harassment, voyeurism, and misuse of images—especially those targeting women and minors—will be dealt with strictly under the IT Act and IPC.
"Let this be a message to all—cyber harassment of women will invite strict criminal action. Digital anonymity will not protect offenders," the statement from the Bengaluru City Police said.
