Justice Prevails Why the Supreme Court Was Right to Send Darshan Back to Jail

Landmark verdict reinforces that murder accused have no right to roam free in our cities

In a ruling that will echo far beyond Karnataka, the Supreme Court of India has delivered what can only be described as a watershed moment for justice. The cancellation of bail for Kannada actor Darshan, actress Pavithra Gowda, and five others in the Renukaswamy murder case is not merely a legal decision; it’s a loud, unflinching statement: the law does not bend for fame or power.

For too long, high-profile accused have enjoyed 5-star treatment while awaiting trial, walking freely in public as if the gravity of their crimes was an afterthought. In this case, the alleged offence is not minor. Darshan and his co-accused face charges of kidnapping, torturing, and murdering a 33-year-old man. Such brutality cannot be brushed aside under the pretext of medical excuses or celebrity privilege.

The Karnataka High Court’s earlier bail order, as the Supreme Court rightly noted, was riddled with “serious weaknesses” and lacked judicial rigour. Bail is a right when circumstances justify it, but it is not a free pass for the rich and influential to roam the city while a grieving family awaits justice.

Supreme Court Cancels Bail of Actor Darshan in Renukaswamy Murder Case, Calls it a ‘Landmark Verdict’

This verdict sends a clear message: the courtroom is not a stage for star power, and murder trials are not publicity tours. Those accused of heinous crimes should remain in custody until the evidence is presented in court. Anything less erodes public faith in the justice system.

By restoring custody and ordering a speedy trial, the Supreme Court has upheld the integrity of our judicial process. In doing so, it has reminded the nation that no one, not even the biggest star, stands above the law.
