Collaborative Initiatives Unveiled as BBMP Takes Bold Steps to Tackle Bengaluru's Drinking Water Crisis

City faces water scarciy
Bengaluru: In a bid to address the severe drinking water scarcity plaguing various parts of Bengaluru, the Bruhat Bengalur Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) convened a crucial meeting today to tackle the pressing issue.

Despite residents diligently paying for tanker water services, many have been left high and dry, exacerbating the crisis. With rates set at Rs 600 for 5,000 liters and Rs 1,000 for 7,000 liters, the escalating prices foreshadow further financial burdens for the populace.

In response, BBMP Chief Commissioner Tushar Girinath announced decisive measures during the meeting. The BBMP, in collaboration with the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), pledged to address the crisis through concerted efforts.

Borewell Initiatives to Alleviate Water Woes

A key resolution emerged from the meeting as BBMP committed to drilling borewells in areas grappling with acute water shortages. Chief Commissioner Girinath affirmed the administration's dedication to resolving Bangalore's water crisis promptly.

Furthermore, BBMP, BWSSB, and BDA affirmed their commitment to streamline efforts, aiming to supply a staggering 1472 million liters per day (Mld) of water to the city. Notably, the completion of the Cauvery Water 5th phase project signifies a promising prospect for relief, with water expected to flow by April.

Collaborative Efforts and Financial Support

Acknowledging the gravity of the situation, BBMP vowed to extend financial support to BWSSB, allocating 10 crores for each constituency under the Deputy Chief Minister's grant, by D. K. Shivakumar.

Additionally, BBMP's proactive approach includes providing essential connections to 110 villages, totaling 40 thousand connections. As the city braces for the impending challenges, the management of Cauvery Water remains a focal point, overseen jointly by Zonal Commissioners and BWSSB officials until the completion of phase 5.

Strategic Measures for Mitigation

Addressing the operational logistics, BBMP emphasized prudent utilization of private tankers to mitigate the crisis. By procuring water from private suppliers, BBMP aims to stabilize tanker rates and ensure equitable distribution, with 200 tankers already enlisted for assistance.

As Bengaluru grapples with an unprecedented water crisis, the collaborative efforts spearheaded by BBMP underscore a commitment to alleviating the plight of its residents. Through strategic interventions and cohesive action, the city stands poised to weather the challenge and emerge resilient.
