Second Term Secured by Voice Vote

New Delhi: Om Birla has been elected as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha for the second time by a voice vote. Initially, both the NDA and the INDIA alliance had reached a consensus on electing him unopposed. However, negotiations broke down when Congress leaders insisted that the deputy speaker's post be given to the opposition as per tradition. BJP leaders said they could not provide such assurance at the moment.

Om Birla, representing the NDA, and Kodikunnil Suresh, representing the INDIA faction, both filed their nominations for the speaker's post. The election was subsequently held, resulting in Birla's re-election.
