Darshan's Judicial Custody Extended Amidst Allegations of Evidence Tampering
Bengaluru: Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa, along with his friend Pavithra Gowda and 15 others, will remain in judicial custody until August 1, as ruled by a special court here on Thursday. Their custody was extended through a video conferencing session where they appeared from Bengaluru and Tumakuru prisons, where they are currently lodged.
The decision to extend custody came following arguments from the special public prosecutor, who emphasized the ongoing need for the accused to be detained to prevent interference with the investigation. The prosecutor highlighted concerns about attempts made by the accused to tamper with technical and physical evidence crucial to the case. It was also disclosed that Rs 83.65 lakh in cash was seized from the accused, who had used multiple SIM cards registered under different names for communication before, during, and after the crime. Granting bail, the prosecution argued, could jeopardize the integrity of the evidence.
According to police sources, the case revolves around the murder of 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of the actor, who allegedly sent offensive messages to Pavithra Gowda, prompting Darshan's involvement. The victim was reportedly lured to a shed in R R Nagar under false pretenses and subjected to torture before succumbing to fatal injuries.
Post-mortem findings attributed Renukaswamy's death to shock and hemorrhage caused by severe blunt force trauma. Pavithra Gowda, identified as the prime instigator by police, allegedly conspired with others and actively participated in the crime.
In a separate legal move, Darshan has petitioned the high court seeking permission for personal belongings and supplies from home, including food, cutlery, bedding, and books, which is scheduled for hearing on Friday.
The case has drawn significant public attention due to the involvement of a prominent actor and remains under investigation by authorities.
