Municipal Workers Push for Abolition of Contract System Across Karnataka

Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Municipal Corporation, City Council, and Municipalities, along with the Civil Workers Association, have urged the government to provide permanent status to sanitation workers employed by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) under direct salary. Despite earlier promises, the release of the permanent employee list has been delayed, affecting workers in Bengaluru and several districts, including Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, and Kalaburagi.

After long-standing efforts, both the previous and current governments had agreed to grant permanent status to 24,500 civil servants across the state. However, the list for direct-paid sanitation workers in BBMP is still pending, despite similar contract systems being abolished in 2018. Workers in some districts continue to work under a contract system.

The association is demanding that the permanent list for BBMP be released in two phases, as previously announced, covering a total of 14,980 workers. They also call for the abolition of contract labor in districts like Hubli-Dharwad, Belgaum, and Kalaburagi, urging that all sanitation workers, including garbage lorry drivers, auto drivers, and cleaners, be employed on direct wages.

Additionally, the association demands that sanitation workers in the state's drainage boards be made permanent employees in local bodies. Workers who have reached the age of 60 and are eligible for retirement pay should receive their dues, and employment should be provided to their dependents.

The Civil Workers Association has urged the government and municipal corporations to implement these orders without further delay, appealing to the media to support their cause.
