Locals Blame Poor Dam Construction for Tragedy

Tumakuru: A 21-year-old man named Hemanta drowned in the Jayamangali River near a broken dam in Handralu Village, Madhugiri Taluk, Tumakuru. The incident occurred on Saturday around 2:30 PM, when Hemanta, who was visiting relatives to celebrate Dussehra, went swimming with three friends. His body became trapped in debris under the dam, and despite a seven-hour rescue operation, authorities were unable to retrieve him.

While Speaking with, News Flash, Tahsildar Shirin Taj said,“We are deeply saddened by this incident. We have called for a Hitachi machine, and I have already informed the authorities to send a water-suction machine. We will begin the rescue operation soon to retrieve the body. All police and fire station officials are working together on this mission.”

Villagers claim the river is overflowing due to the rainy season, and some allege that poor construction of the dam, built just three to four years ago, contributed to the tragedy. The dam has reportedly deteriorated under the pressure of the water, and one side has collapsed. Locals have voiced frustration over the dam's construction, linking it to the loss of lives.

Rescue operations are expected to continue.
