BOSCO Celebrates International Day of the Girl Child

Event emphasizes the importance of education and gender equality for girls' empowerment

Bengaluru: Bangalore Oniyavara Seva Coota (BOSCO), a non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting underprivileged children and youth, celebrated the International Day of the Girl Child on October 11, 2024, at BOSCO Rainbow Home, Wilson Garden, Bengaluru. The event focused on the theme, "Elevating Girls' Voices for Sustainable Development."

The programme commenced with a rally, accompanied by a signature campaign, which started from Hopcoms at Lalbagh Gate. The rally aimed to raise awareness about the significance of supporting and empowering girl children. As part of the event, the children of BOSCO performed a skit that underscored the importance of the girl child in society.

The rally was flagged off by the Chief Guest, Smt. Priyanka Upendra, a renowned actress in the Kannada film industry. In her speech, she highlighted the persistence of crimes against women and girls despite global progress. She encouraged girls to focus on strengthening their mind, body, and soul, and to concentrate on shaping their futures. Priyanka Upendra emphasized the role of education as a powerful tool for girls, enabling them to gain knowledge, build confidence, achieve their goals, and attain financial independence. She commended BOSCO for its commitment to the upliftment of girl children and its dedication to their development.

In the keynote address, Fr. Varghese Pallipuram urged the audience to work towards achieving gender equality and ensuring justice for girls. Other dignitaries who spoke at the event included Shri. Siddaraju, Assistant Sub Inspector, Traffic Police Station; Shri Ambareesh, RTI, BBMP Advisor; Ms. Manjula Ullal, City Desk Coordinator; and Smt. Sumangala, Assistant Principal, Government Model Primary School, Wilson Garden. Each of the speakers reinforced the need for continued efforts to support girl children and promote their rights.

Following the formal programme, cultural performances by the children were held, adding a festive touch to the event. The day concluded with a closing ceremony at BOSCO Rainbow Home. The celebration saw the participation of around 225 children from various BOSCO centers and communities, all of whom contributed to the success of the event through their involvement in the activities.
