Illegal Stockpile Behind Private College Sparks Major Crackdown by Food & Civil Supplies Department
Mangaluru: In a major crackdown on illegal foodgrain hoarding, officials from the Department of Food and Civil Supplies have seized nearly 500 quintals of rice from a warehouse operating behind a private college in Mangaluru city.
The raid was led by Deputy Director Anitha V Madlur, following multiple public complaints regarding suspicious rice storage. The warehouse, reportedly rented by Anupama Enterprises, contained large stocks of branded rice varieties such as basmati, sona masuri, jeera rice, and broken rice, as well as unbranded white bags, raising suspicions of PDS (Public Distribution System) rice diversion.
“All stocks have been seized and a case has been filed under the Essential Commodities Act,” confirmed Madlur. She added that laboratory testing has been initiated to identify the source and authenticity of the rice, particularly to verify if Anna Bhagya scheme rice from North Karnataka had been illegally rerouted, polished, and rebranded for commercial sale.
Authorities are also investigating whether the warehouse had valid permits to store such a vast quantity of rice. Further action will be taken based on the test results and documentation review.
This incident has raised serious concerns over the misuse of government welfare schemes and the growing black market trade in essential commodities.
