Tragic Incident Leaves Newborn Fatherless and Young Wife Widowed; Two Arrested as Police Hunt for More
Kolar: In a horrifying case of reckless bravado, a 21-year-old youth lost his life in Poojarahalli village of Mulbagal taluk, Kolar district, after consuming five full bottles of liquor without water as part of a Rs 10,000 bet.
The deceased, Karthik (21), had reportedly challenged his peers—Venkatareddy, Subramani, and three others—claiming he could down the bottles neat. The men egged him on, promising a cash prize if he succeeded. Driven by overconfidence and peer pressure, Karthik drank all five bottles, but his body quickly succumbed to alcohol poisoning.
Moments later, as his condition worsened, Karthik reportedly begged his friends to rush him to a hospital. He was taken to Mulbagal hospital but could not be revived.
The tragedy is compounded by the fact that Karthik had become a father just eight days earlier. His wife, pregnant at the time, had been staying with her family for delivery. The sudden loss has devastated the young woman, who now faces a future alone with her newborn.
Following a complaint by Karthik’s family, Venkatareddy and Subramani have been arrested by Nangali police, who are currently searching for the remaining accused. Locals are in shock over the incident, questioning how a life could be lost over such a senseless wager.
Karthik’s addiction to alcohol and gambling reportedly played a role in his fatal decision, raising urgent concerns about youth behavior, peer pressure, and substance abuse in rural areas.
