Student body accuses BJP-led Centre of saffronising education, calls changes a threat to secular values
Bengaluru: The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) has strongly condemned the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) for what it calls a “vicious attack on scientific and secular education” after the removal of chapters related to the Mughals and Delhi Sultans from the Class 7 Social Science textbook.
According to AIDSO, these historical sections have been replaced with content focused on ancient Hindu dynasties, allegedly under the guise of promoting “Indian policy.” The organisation claims this selective rewriting of history is part of a broader attempt by the ruling BJP government to influence young minds through ideological control.
The revised curriculum now includes a chapter titled “Sacred Geography,” which highlights Hindu religious sites such as the 12 Jyotirlingas, Char Dham Yatra, Shakti Peethas, and the Maha Kumbh. AIDSO argues that this overemphasis on religious practices represents a clear move towards saffronisation and is “diametrically opposed” to the secular vision of India’s renaissance thinkers.
“History is not a religious scripture,” AIDSO stated. “It is a scientific record of the past that shapes our present. Twisting facts to align with religious ideologies is an open attempt to divide society and promote communal sentiments.”
The organisation further accused the BJP government of using education as a political tool, transforming textbooks into “party mouthpieces” and undermining the critical thinking abilities of the youth.
Calling for unified resistance, AIDSO urged students, educators, and all concerned citizens to rise in protest and defend India’s commitment to scientific and secular education.
