Congress hails Centre’s decision as a step towards social justice; Karnataka pledges full support for nationwide caste census

Bengaluru: In a significant political development, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar said that the Central Government has accepted Rahul Gandhi's long-standing demand to initiate a nationwide caste census, marking a major policy shift on the issue of social justice and representation.

Speaking at a press interaction in Bengaluru, Shivakumar stated, “Rahul Gandhi has consistently maintained that conducting a caste census is the Centre’s duty. The government has now yielded to his insistence and is moving forward.”

Highlighting the importance of the move, Shivakumar noted that the Congress party has always believed in equitable distribution of resources based on population strength. “Justice means giving facilities based on how many people there are in each community,” he mentioned, adding that this aligns with the core values and ideology of the Congress party.

Rahul Gandhi had earlier said that a specific timeline must be set for the caste census and that its implementation should be carried out without further delay. The central government's positive response is being seen as a victory for inclusive politics.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, too, echoed similar sentiments and assured that the Karnataka government would fully cooperate in facilitating the census process at the state level.

The push for caste census has been gaining momentum in recent months, with several states and opposition leaders arguing that accurate population data is essential to bridge socio-economic gaps and revise reservation policies based on contemporary realities.
