Protests erupt across Karnataka; protesters demand apology, threaten to block ‘Thug Life’ screening
Bengaluru: Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday strongly condemned actor-politician Kamal Haasan for his controversial remark stating that the Kannada language was born from Tamil. The CM stated that Kannada has a rich and long-standing history, and Kamal Haasan lacks knowledge about it.
“Kannada language has a very long history… He (Kamal Haasan) doesn’t know it,” Siddaramaiah said, responding to the actor’s comment made during the audio launch of his film ‘Thug Life’ in Chennai.
Kamal Haasan’s statement has sparked widespread outrage among Kannadigas, with several pro-Kannada organizations staging protests in Bengaluru, Belagavi, Mysuru, Hubballi, and other parts of the state.
Protesters have demanded a public apology from Kamal Haasan for undermining the legacy of Kannada, a language with distinct literary and cultural identity.
They have also issued a stern warning that they would block the release and screening of ‘Thug Life’ in Karnataka if an apology is not issued soon.
“We won’t tolerate disrespect to our language. Kamal Haasan must apologize immediately, or we’ll intensify our agitation,” said a protester in Bengaluru.
The issue continues to gain traction on social media, with #ApologizeKamalHaasan trending in the Kannada digital community.
