Puttur-Mangaluru National Highway turns deadly again as high-speed bus smashes into bike; blood-stained road tells tale of tragedy as grieving locals demand accountability
Puttur: In a gut-wrenching road tragedy that has shaken the region, a devastating accident between a government-run bus and a two-wheeler at Kabaka near the Puttur-Mangaluru National Highway claimed the life of Arun Kulal, a respected member of the Narikombu Grama Panchayat, and left his son Dhyan Kulal battling for life with grievous injuries.
The collision occurred on Sunday, May 11, near Kabaka-Kuvettila, when the state-owned bus heading from Mangaluru to Puttur collided head-on with the two-wheeler reportedly coming from the Mani side. Eyewitnesses described the crash as “a thunderous blow that shattered the peace of the morning,” leaving both the father and son lying motionless on the tarmac.
“We heard a loud bang and rushed to the spot. What we saw next was horrifying — the bike was crushed and both victims were bleeding heavily, struggling for breath,” said a local resident who arrived moments after the crash.
Despite immediate efforts to rush the victims to a nearby hospital, Arun Kulal tragically succumbed to his injuries on the way, leaving the entire Narikombu village in mourning. His son, Dhyan, is said to be in critical condition, and is currently undergoing intensive medical care.
Police officials from the Puttur Traffic Police Station arrived at the scene and have launched an investigation into the incident. Preliminary reports suggest overspeeding or potential misjudgment could have led to the fatal crash, but authorities are yet to confirm.
“We are thoroughly investigating all angles, including possible negligence and traffic violations. The bus driver will be questioned, and CCTV footage from nearby locations is being collected,” said a police official involved in the probe.
This latest accident has once again raised serious questions about the safety conditions on the Puttur-Mangaluru highway, a stretch that has become increasingly notorious for accidents. Locals are now demanding stricter regulation and improved infrastructure to prevent further loss of lives.
“How many more lives must be lost before action is taken? Arun Kulal was a pillar of our community. This isn’t just an accident — it’s a reflection of negligence and apathy,” lamented a grieving neighbor.
