Accused promised top post through political influence; FIR filed for cheating and criminal intimidation
Bengaluru: In yet another fraud case linked to Bangalore University, a 67-year-old retired professor has filed a police complaint alleging he was cheated of ₹35 lakh under the false promise of being appointed as the Registrar of the university.
The complainant, Prof. R.K. Somashekhar, who retired in 2019 from the Department of Environmental Science at the university’s Jnanabharathi campus, has named B.G. Ravikumar, a resident of Nandanam Layout, Horamavu, as the accused. An FIR has been registered at Govindarajanagar police station under charges of cheating, breach of trust, and life threat.
According to Somashekhar’s statement, he met Ravikumar in 2010 through mutual friends. By 2015, Ravikumar allegedly claimed he had strong political connections and could secure the Registrar’s post at Bangalore University for a price. After negotiations, Somashekhar agreed to pay ₹35 lakh, with the promise that the amount would be refunded if the plan did not succeed.
“I paid him the money in phases during July 2015. He promised results in six months and warned me not to speak about the deal. But since then, he has been dodging and offering false excuses,” Prof. Somashekhar said in his complaint.
The incident has once again raised concerns over rising fraudulent activities in the name of academic appointments, and the misuse of alleged political influence in Karnataka’s education sector.
Police have launched an investigation and are verifying financial transactions and communications between the accused and the complainant.
