Woman accuses SHO Sandesh of physical assault inside Moodabidri police station over a matrimonial dispute; demands justice

Udupi: In a disturbing incident from coastal Karnataka, a woman named Sumathi Naik has alleged that she was physically assaulted by the Station House Officer (SHO) of Moodabidri Police Station, Sandesh, while being summoned in connection with a matrimonial dispute involving her elder sister.

Sumathi, who has now been admitted to the Ajjarkadu District Hospital in Udupi, made serious allegations during a media briefing.

“They called me to the station over a family issue. At the police station, SHO Sandesh abused me with vulgar words, accused me of being an adulteress, punched me and beat me. My son and my nephew, who tried to record the incident, were also beaten and their mobile phones snatched,”
Sumathi Naik told reporters.

She further alleged that while they were returning home in an auto-rickshaw, the police followed them in a Hoysala patrol vehicle, brought them back to the station, and subjected them to further threats and assault.

Complaint Filed with Commissioner and Home Department

Sumathi Naik confirmed that she has already filed a formal complaint with the Police Commissioner and the Karnataka Home Department, demanding strict action against SHO Sandesh. She has appealed for justice and accountability within the police force.

“I want action against the officer who misused his power and humiliated me. I demand justice,”
Sumathi added.

Next Steps:

  • The Karnataka Home Department is expected to initiate an internal inquiry.

  • Human rights and women’s groups are likely to take note of the issue.

  • Police officials have not yet released an official statement on the allegations.
