City Records 103 mm Rainfall in 24 Hours; IMD Warns of Power Cuts, Flooding, and Tree Falls in Several Districts
Bengaluru: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Bengaluru and multiple districts across Karnataka, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall today and tomorrow. The alert comes in the wake of a cyclonic circulation that is intensifying across southern India, especially over the southeast Bay of Bengal, stretching from Andhra Pradesh to northern Tamil Nadu, triggering heavy rain across coastal and interior regions.
N Puviarasu, Director of the Regional Meteorological Centre, confirmed the alert and urged citizens to remain cautious.
"Heavy rainfall is expected in several parts of the state, including Bengaluru. Coastal regions will also be significantly affected," Puviarasu told PTI.
Bengaluru Among Worst-Hit; Urban Chaos as Streets Turn into Streams
In the past 24 hours alone, Bengaluru city has received 103 mm of rainfall, making it one of the most rain-battered urban areas in Karnataka. Saturday night and Sunday witnessed severe waterlogging in several localities, including Sai Layout in Horamavu, where 4–5 feet of water inundated the roads, leaving motorists and pedestrians stranded for hours.
In NC Colony on Tannery Road, residents faced an even grimmer situation as rainwater entered homes, damaging property and disrupting daily life. Locals blame poor drainage and civic apathy, citing repeated complaints that have gone unaddressed.
"We have been raising complaints about blocked drains for months. Now water is inside our houses. Where are the authorities?" said an irate resident of NC Colony.
Widespread Alert Across Karnataka Districts
The Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rainfall till Thursday across 23 districts, including:
-
Bengaluru Urban and Rural
-
Kolar, Chikkaballapur, Tumkur, Mandya, Mysuru
-
Hassan, Kodagu, Belagavi, Bidar, Raichur, Yadgir
-
Davangere and Chitradurga
With the possibility of temporary power cuts, traffic congestion, and tree or branch falls, the IMD has urged local authorities to remain on high alert and deploy emergency response units where necessary.
"Minor disruptions like traffic snarls, power outages, and uprooting of trees can be expected. Citizens should avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours," read the IMD bulletin issued this morning.
Cyclonic System Fuelling South India's Rain Fury
According to the IMD’s latest analysis, the cyclonic system over the southeast Bay of Bengal has shifted inland, moving over Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Telangana and into north Tamil Nadu. This movement has amplified the intensity of rains across southern India, particularly impacting interior Karnataka and urban centres like Bengaluru.
Citizens Urged to Exercise Caution
Bengaluru's civic body and emergency response teams have been put on alert. However, residents are calling for more proactive measures, especially in areas vulnerable to flooding and where drain blockages are a recurring issue.
As the yellow alert continues for the next 48 hours, residents are advised to:
-
Stay indoors during heavy rainfall
-
Avoid low-lying flood-prone areas
-
Refrain from parking vehicles under trees
-
Keep emergency supplies and power backups ready
The Monsoon’s Dark Turn: Urban Chaos and a Civic Wake-Up Call

From flooded colonies to blocked roads and stalled vehicles, Bengaluru’s infrastructure is once again buckling under monsoon pressure. With rainfall predicted to intensify through the week, this is not just a weather warning—it’s a civic alarm bell ringing across Karnataka.
