Tragedy Strikes Nadia District Days After TMC Victory; Mamata Banerjee Expresses Shock, Demands Swift Justice for Child Victim

Kolkata: A nine-year-old girl was killed in a tragic bomb explosion in Barochandgarh village, located under Kaliganj police station limits in West Bengal’s Nadia district, police confirmed on Monday afternoon.

The incident has shaken the region just days after the Trinamool Congress (TMC) secured a resounding bypoll victory in the Kaliganj Assembly seat. TMC’s Alifa Ahmed, daughter of the late MLA Naseeruddin Ahmed, won by a landslide margin of 50,049 votes over BJP’s Ashish Ghosh.

According to initial reports, the bomb exploded near a residential area, killing the child on the spot. The exact cause of the blast remains under investigation.

“The girl’s body has been sent for postmortem. We are investigating the cause of the explosion,” a senior police official said, adding that all angles — including political, criminal, and accidental — are being examined.

CM Mamata Banerjee Reacts: “Deeply Saddened”

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed shock and grief over the child’s death and demanded strict legal action against those responsible.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened by the death of a girl in the blast in Barochandgarh. My prayers and thoughts are with her family in this hour of grief,” Mamata posted on X (formerly Twitter).

“The police should take strong and decisive legal action against the perpetrators as soon as possible,” she added, emphasizing zero tolerance for violence involving children.

Background: Kaliganj Bypoll Victory Amid Tense Political Atmosphere

The blast comes amid heightened political sensitivity in the region, following a high-voltage by-election campaign in Kaliganj, necessitated by the death of sitting MLA Naseeruddin Ahmed in February. His daughter, Alifa Ahmed, was fielded by the ruling TMC and registered a sweeping victory last week.

Though no political connection has been established yet in the blast, opposition leaders have begun questioning the law-and-order situation in the region, urging a high-level probe.
