Bengaluru: A tragic incident in Basavanagudi has left a young man named Akshay Kumar battling for his life after a large tree branch fell on him, causing severe head injuries. The victim has been admitted to Apollo Hospital in Jayanagar, where he is currently in a deep coma and on ventilator support.

According to neurosurgeons treating Akshay, a CT scan revealed extensive trauma to the brain. The medical team has confirmed that Akshay slipped into a coma shortly after the incident and remains in critical condition in the ICU.

“The injuries are serious. We are waiting for his brain to show some response before proceeding with further treatment,”
a senior neurosurgeon from Apollo Hospital told News Flash.

Family in Distress, Questions Civic Responsibility:

The family members of Akshay Kumar are devastated, stating that this tragedy could have been prevented had the municipal authorities cleared the dangerous tree earlier.

“This would not have happened if the BBMP had taken action. That tree was clearly a hazard,”
said a close relative of the victim.

Locals from the Basavanagudi area have echoed the family's anger, claiming they had previously filed complaints about weak and dry trees in the neighborhood, but no action was taken.

This incident raises serious questions about urban tree maintenance, particularly as monsoon season intensifies across Karnataka. The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) has come under sharp criticism in recent times over its failure to clear decaying trees, especially in densely populated residential zones.

With increasing monsoon-related risks, experts and activists are demanding that the BBMP and related civic bodies immediately conduct audits of trees in vulnerable areas to avoid further mishaps.

“A life is hanging in the balance today. Will the authorities only act after more lives are lost?”
asked a resident welfare association president in Basavanagudi.
