Karnataka Rakshana Vedike accepts SC verdict; urges Kamal Haasan to apologise for remarks on Kannada language
Bengaluru: Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (KRV) President Praveen Shetty on Wednesday clarified that the organisation will not oppose the release of actor-politician Kamal Haasan’s film Thug Life, despite previous objections linked to the actor’s controversial remarks about the Kannada language.
While addressing the media, Shetty stated that although Kamal Haasan had hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas by saying that the Kannada language was born from Tamil, the Supreme Court’s directive on the matter would be respected.
“We are not opposing the release of Kamal Haasan's film Thug Life. The controversy was simple. He should have apologized after hurting the sentiments of Kannadigas, as the High Court had advised. But they approached the Supreme Court, and now that the verdict is out, we accept it,” Shetty said.
SC Directive & DCM’s Appeal for Peace:
Earlier today, the Supreme Court directed the Karnataka government to ensure that the film Thug Life is allowed to release in the state and sought a compliance report within 24 hours.
In response, Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar urged pro-Kannada groups to abide by the apex court’s order and not disrupt peace in the state.
“We must all respect the court’s order in the Kamal Haasan case. I appeal to the pro-Kannada organizations to maintain peace and not take the law into their own hands. Karnataka is a peace-loving state.”
DCM Shivakumar stated.
Background:
The controversy stems from Kamal Haasan’s past remarks, where he allegedly stated that Kannada is derived from Tamil, triggering widespread backlash from pro-Kannada groups and cultural activists.
Activists had earlier called for a ban on the screening of Thug Life in Karnataka. The case went from the Karnataka High Court to the Supreme Court, which finally directed the state to ensure law and order during the release.
“Police Cannot Be Used to Suppress Dissent”:
Praveen Shetty also emphasized that while they accept the legal order, freedom of expression and peaceful protest are constitutional rights.
“Stopping activism through police deployment is against the Constitution and the law of the land.”
He asserted.
About ‘Thug Life’:
Thug Life is an upcoming film starring Kamal Haasan, directed by Mani Ratnam. The film has been highly anticipated across South India, but its Karnataka release was mired in controversy until the apex court intervened.
