University of Plymouth faces backlash after religious icons sacred to Hindu students are stolen in what’s being condemned as a targeted hate crime. Community demands swift action and justice

Plymouth: In a deeply disturbing and offensive act of religious desecration, sacred Murtis (Hindu idols) have been stolen from the reflection space inside the University of Plymouth library, sparking outrage and fear among Hindu students and across the British Hindu community.

“This is not just theft—it is a targeted hate crime. These Murtis are sacred. Their removal is an act of deep disrespect towards our faith.”
said a Hindu student at the university, requesting anonymity due to safety concerns.

The term Murti, derived from Sanskrit, refers to a sacred form or image of divinity, used for prayer, reflection, and inner peace. These idols are not merely decorative or symbolic; they are central to spiritual life and personal devotion. Their sudden disappearance is being viewed as a deliberate attack on religious identity and a violation of personal and cultural sanctity.

“In our tradition, a Murti is not just an object; it is a divine presence. This act is nothing short of an assault on our peace and dignity.”
said a local community leader.

Hindu students at the university are now demanding accountability and immediate action from university authorities. Community leaders and rights groups are urging a full-scale investigation, recognition of the incident as a hate crime, and public assurance of student safety and religious freedom.

“We strongly urge the University of Plymouth to take a stand: investigate thoroughly, act swiftly, and show Hindu students that their beliefs matter, that they matter,”
reads a joint statement from British Hindu organisations.

So far, university officials have not issued a formal statement, fueling further anger and anxiety. Many are asking why security measures were not in place to protect a sacred space in an institution that claims to celebrate diversity and inclusivity.
