Heavy Rains Trigger Flash Disaster Near Silai Bend; All Missing Workers Believed to be of Nepali Origin
Uttarkashi (Uttarakhand): In a tragic incident, nine road construction workers are feared to have been swept away following a cloudburst that struck the Yamunotri National Highway in Uttarkashi district during the early hours of Today.
The Uttarkashi Disaster Control Room confirmed that the workers went missing due to torrential rains and a sudden cloudburst near Silai Bend in the Barkot area, along the route to the Yamunotri temple, a major pilgrimage destination.
“Due to intense rainfall and the resulting cloudburst, several workers staying in tents near Silai Bend have gone missing. A rescue operation is currently underway,”
said a spokesperson from the Disaster Control Room.
Rescue Operations Underway
According to Barkot Police Station SHO Deepak Kathait, the first information about the cloudburst was received around midnight. A rescue team was immediately dispatched to the location.
“The workers were stationed in temporary tents at the construction site when the downpour hit the area. Eight to nine people are currently missing and feared washed away,”
SHO Kathait informed.
All the missing individuals are reported to be of Nepali origin, employed in ongoing road construction projects along the route.
Highway Blocked at Several Points
The cloudburst has caused significant damage, with the Yamunotri highway blocked at multiple locations, including Silai Bend, making rescue efforts more challenging.
“The terrain is difficult, and the weather remains unpredictable. We are coordinating with local administration, police, and disaster response teams to speed up search and rescue operations.”
said a senior official from the district administration.
Local authorities are also working to clear debris and restore connectivity on the affected sections of the highway.
