What was supposed to be a normal academic day turned into panic and chaos as a postgraduate medical student faked a bomb threat at her own college hospital—just to avoid giving a seminar
Mangaluru: In a bizarre and shocking incident that rocked Mangaluru’s Deralakatte region, Ullal Police have arrested a postgraduate medical student for allegedly making a hoax bomb threat call to her own medical college and hospital, all in an attempt to escape an academic seminar scheduled for June 4.
According to Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy, the student, whose identity has not been revealed, dialled in five separate bomb threat calls around 8:45 AM on June 4, claiming that explosives had been placed within the private hospital premises.
“The call sparked panic among patients, doctors and hospital staff. Security was tightened immediately, and a massive search operation began,”
said Commissioner Sudhir Kumar Reddy, speaking to media on Saturday.
More than 30 security personnel, including bomb disposal squads and dog squads, were deployed for a 10-hour-long combing operation. The entire hospital—main buildings, wards, parking zones—was searched inch by inch. However, no explosives or suspicious objects were found.
Ironically, it was the accused student herself who filed the initial police complaint regarding the bomb threats. Based on her complaint, a case was registered at Ullal Police Station under Sections 352(2) and 352(4) of the IPC, 2023.
“A special investigation team conducted a technical analysis of the call data. The trail led back to the very student who had filed the complaint,”
revealed a senior officer from Ullal Police.
Further investigation exposed the reason behind this calculated mischief: the student had a scheduled seminar presentation on June 4, which she allegedly wanted to avoid. To escape the academic responsibility, she resorted to triggering fear and disruption through a fake bomb threat—an act that has now landed her behind bars. The student’s mobile phone has been seized, and the investigation is ongoing.
This incident has raised serious questions about academic pressure, mental health, and the extreme measures students may resort to under stress.
