Actor Shares Cartoon Criticising ‘Operation Sindhur’, Sparks Political Storm and Online Backlash

Bengaluru: Actor and political commentator Prakash Raj has once again stirred the political pot, this time by taking a sarcastic swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the recently launched initiative dubbed ‘Operation Sindhur’.

The outspoken actor took to Twitter to post a cartoon by noted satirist Satish Acharya, along with a caption that has now gone viral across platforms. The cartoon, titled “Har Ghar Sindhur”, appears to criticise the government’s campaign and suggest that it carries underlying political motives.

“Which woman accepts sindoor from an old man?”,
wrote Prakash Raj, directly addressing Prime Minister Modi in his tweet.

The post was an apparent satire on the symbolism of sindoor — traditionally associated with marriage, juxtaposed with the Prime Minister's image. This tweet, which blends political commentary with social critique, has polarised netizens.

While many on social media platforms rallied in support of Prakash Raj, hailing it as an exercise of freedom of expression and artistic dissent, others slammed the tweet as disrespectful and derogatory toward the country’s highest office.

“This is not freedom of speech, it’s targeted humiliation of a leader loved by millions,”
posted a user on X (formerly Twitter), tagging government officials and urging legal action.

Conversely, others defended the actor, saying the post was a satirical take on the politicisation of religious and cultural symbols.

“Prakash Raj has just held up a mirror. The outrage proves the point,”
said another user, sparking further debate on the intersection of politics, religion, and gendered symbolism.

Not the First Time

Prakash Raj is no stranger to controversy, particularly when it comes to his vocal criticism of the BJP leadership and Prime Minister Modi. He has previously made headlines for openly opposing the ruling party’s policies and supporting various opposition movements.

His latest tweet comes amidst the government’s rollout of “Operation Sindhur”, a campaign that, according to official statements, aims to uplift the dignity and visibility of married women across communities. Critics, however, allege that it’s yet another emotionally charged campaign with electoral undertones.
