Tragic Kanwar Yatra Mishap: Collision Between Bus and Gas Cylinder Truck Near Jamunia Forest in Deoghar Leaves 18 Dead and Dozens Critically Injured; Probe Underway
Ranchi: 18 Dead, Many Injured in Deoghar Road Tragedy
At least 18 people were killed and more than 20 others sustained serious injuries in a devastating road accident during the Kanwar Yatra in Jharkhand's Deoghar district early Tuesday morning. The tragedy occurred around 4:30 AM near the Jamunia forest area under the Mohanpur police station limits when a private bus carrying Kanwariya pilgrims collided head-on with a truck loaded with gas cylinders.
Collision Near Jamunia Forest
According to police officials, the incident happened when a 32-seater bus transporting devotees crashed into a truck coming from the opposite direction.
“The bus collided with a truck carrying gas cylinders while the Kanwariyas were on their way for the Shravan pilgrimage. The collision took place near Jamunia forest. Rescue operations were immediately launched,”
said Inspector General (Dumka Range) Shailendra Kumar Sinha, speaking to news agency PTI.
Discrepancy in Casualty Figures
There appears to be a discrepancy in the reported number of fatalities. While Deputy Superintendent of Police (Traffic) Laxman Prasad stated that at least nine people died, he confirmed that the injured were promptly shifted to hospitals for treatment.
“We have rushed the injured to Deoghar Sadar Hospital. Emergency medical assistance is being provided. The exact death toll is being verified,”
said DySP Laxman Prasad.
However, Godda MP Nishikant Dubey, who represents the affected region, claimed a higher number of casualties.
“A total of 18 devotees lost their lives in the tragic accident involving the bus and truck. All were part of the Kanwar Yatra, and this is a dark day for us during the holy month of Shravan.”
said MP Nishikant Dubey, expressing his grief.
Bodies Shifted to Deoghar Sadar Hospital
The identities of the deceased are still being confirmed by the authorities. All bodies have been moved to Deoghar Sadar Hospital for post-mortem examinations. Local sources confirmed that the injured are being treated for severe trauma and fractures.
“More than 20 devotees have been critically injured. The condition of several passengers is serious.”
A local resident told News Flash, urging the government for compensation and stricter safety monitoring during pilgrimages.
Government Response and Ongoing Investigation
While no official compensation has yet been announced, state authorities have confirmed that an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the collision and whether negligence was involved.
