AAP Slams Centre’s Move to Establish Evening Courts

Calls decision 'unscientific' and a 'betrayal' of the legal fraternity

Bengaluru: The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has come out strongly against the Central Government’s decision to extend court working hours from 5 PM to 9 PM and establish evening courts, calling the move "completely unscientific" and a threat to legal professionalism.

Speaking at a press conference today, AAP Law Department Chief Laxmikant Rao said,

“This is not a reform but a betrayal. We will not allow evening courts to be established under any circumstances.”

Historical Precedent and Constitutional Violation Alleged

Rao recalled a similar attempt made in 1999 by former Law Minister Ram Jethmalani, which was later withdrawn due to widespread protests from the legal community.

“Reintroducing evening courts is condemnable. It is a violation of Article 22 of the Constitution. Courts risk becoming factories, not temples of justice,” he said.

He also warned that the move could disrupt access to justice for common citizens.

Evening Courts Will Disrupt Legal Preparation

The AAP leader argued that lawyers need the evening hours to consult clients, review documents, and prepare for hearings, especially when they already struggle to balance work with personal life.

“This decision will break the back of working lawyers. Evening hours are essential for case preparations, not court appearances,” Rao emphasized.

Alternative Suggestions by AAP

The party urged the central government to fill vacant judicial positions instead of overburdening the existing judiciary.

“Appoint vacant judicial officers and utilise retired judges, stenographers, and typists to clear the backlog. That’s the scientific and practical solution,” Rao said.

He appealed to the state governments not to cooperate with the Centre on implementing this “arbitrary” policy.

Support from Party Leaders

The press conference also saw the presence of:

  • Nanjappa Kalegowda, State Vice-President and Advocate, AAP Legal Cell

  • Lohit Hanumapur, State President, AAP Youth Wing

Both leaders echoed Rao’s sentiments and vowed to mobilize legal professionals across Karnataka to resist the policy.
