Deputy CM accepts IISc expert inspection, accuses BJP of halting Hemavathi canal project and diverting medical college
Bengaluru: Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar today asserted that all taluks in Tumakuru district are equally important, and a comprehensive water distribution scheme will be implemented to address the needs of the entire region.
Speaking to reporters from his Sadashivanagar residence, Shivakumar addressed growing concerns over the Hemavathi link canal project, stating, “We have taken feedback from representatives of Tumakuru district. Some people are protesting that the Hemavathi link canal must not be a pipeline, but that is a decision taken by the government.”
Responding to criticism and demands from certain quarters, he confirmed that the government had agreed to a recommendation by Union Minister Somanna for an expert inspection. “We have accepted the recommendation for a study by experts from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc). This issue is not about Kunigal alone; we are committed to providing an equitable water supply to all taluks in Tumakuru district,” he emphasised.
“We have a plan in place. Our aim is to distribute water fairly and responsibly across all taluks. We must take care of everyone’s interest,” Shivakumar said, reinforcing the government’s commitment.
In a political swipe, he added that the Congress government had originally started the Hemavathi project, but the BJP had stalled it. “Not only did they stop our project, but they also took back the medical college that was approved for my constituency. Despite Yediyurappa’s promise, the college went to Chikkaballapura. These are government decisions, but they affect the people deeply,” Shivakumar said.
The remarks come amid a wider debate over water infrastructure and resource allocation in Karnataka, with Tumakuru often at the centre of developmental discussions due to its semi-arid geography and water scarcity challenges.
