BJP Slams Rahul Gandhi Over 'Dead Economy' Remark Amid Trump's Sarcastic Jibe on India-Russia Ties

BJP defends India’s economic resilience, calls Rahul Gandhi’s support of Trump’s remarks “shameful insult” to the nation’s achievements

New Delhi: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a sharp counterattack against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for endorsing former US President Donald Trump's jibe on India's economy. Calling Gandhi’s remarks “shameful” and damaging to India’s global image, BJP leaders accused the Congress of echoing foreign propaganda that undermines national interests.

The row began after Trump, during a campaign speech, sarcastically referred to India and Russia as having “dead economies”, stating, “I don't care what Russia and India do — let them bury their dead economies together.” This prompted Rahul Gandhi to echo Trump’s tone and accuse the Modi government of destroying India’s economic, defence, and foreign policies.

"Everyone except the Prime Minister and the Finance Minister knows that India's economy is dead," Rahul Gandhi said in a post on X.

BJP Hits Back, Says India Is World’s Fastest Growing Economy

Reacting strongly, BJP leaders slammed Gandhi for siding with Trump’s controversial remarks.

"Rahul Gandhi has stooped to the lowest level by supporting the slur of 'dead economy'. It is a shameful insult to the aspirations, achievements and well-being of the Indian people. But to be honest, the only thing truly 'dead' is his political credibility,"
Amit Malviya, BJP IT Cell Head, posted on X

Citing recent economic data and international endorsements, the BJP asserted that India remains the world’s fastest-growing major economy, even amid global economic headwinds. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank have recently upgraded India's growth forecasts, reflecting confidence in its post-pandemic recovery and structural reforms.

Opposition vs Government: Political War Over Economy Intensifies

The episode has deepened the ongoing war of words between the ruling BJP and the Congress, with economic performance becoming a key battleground. While the Congress blames the Modi government for alleged economic mismanagement, BJP leaders argue that Rahul Gandhi’s remarks are not just misguided, but also demoralizing for Indian entrepreneurs, workers, and the global perception of India.

The BJP maintained that India’s resilient economic fundamentals, growing manufacturing sector, digital infrastructure push, and record-high FDI inflows are proof of economic strength—not decline.

Trump’s Remark Sparks Diplomatic and Political Debate

Trump’s comment has not only stirred political tensions within India but also raised questions about how India’s economic standing is perceived globally. Though Trump’s statement was delivered in a sarcastic tone during a domestic campaign rally, its political fallout has created ripples across party lines in India.

India’s foreign policy watchers see this as an attempt by Trump to criticize current US foreign engagement policies, rather than a direct evaluation of India’s economic health. However, the political appropriation of the statement has added fuel to the domestic discourse.
