Three terrorists gunned down in Lidwas encounter near Srinagar; gun battle continues in Harwan as joint forces intensify crackdown
Srinagar: In a decisive counter-offensive following the Pahalgam terror attack, the Indian Army, along with CRPF and the Jammu and Kashmir Police, launched a large-scale anti-terror operation codenamed 'Operation Mahadev'. In a major breakthrough, three terrorists suspected to be involved in the Pahalgam incident were neutralised in the Lidwas area near Srinagar.
Joint Operation Launched in Lidwas
According to security sources, the encounter began when terrorists opened fire on a patrolling party, prompting a swift retaliation from the combined forces. The firefight resulted in the elimination of three militants, believed to be linked to the recently executed attack in Pahalgam.
“This is a direct response to the Pahalgam attack. We had specific intelligence inputs and launched a coordinated operation.”
A senior security official said on condition of anonymity.
Second Encounter Ongoing in Harwan
Acting on fresh inputs from intelligence agencies, another team of security forces moved into the Mulnar area of Harwan in Srinagar, where a second group of terrorists was reportedly hiding. Additional troops were rushed to the spot, and the area has been cordoned off as exchange of fire continues.
“We are committed to neutralising every threat and ensuring civilian safety. The operation is still active.”
said an officer from the Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Tensions Remain High Across the Region
The back-to-back encounters have heightened tension in the Kashmir Valley, which is still reeling from the shock of the Pahalgam attack that claimed multiple lives. Intelligence agencies have warned of possible regrouping attempts by militant outfits, prompting increased vigil and combing operations across south and central Kashmir.
Security officials say Operation Mahadev could extend over the coming days as more leads emerge. Drone surveillance, sniper units, and night-vision-equipped teams are being deployed to track fleeing suspects and secure sensitive zones.
More Details Awaited
As of now, identification of the neutralised terrorists is underway, and their possible links with banned organisations are being verified. Authorities have appealed to locals to remain indoors and cooperate with security personnel.
“We urge the public to stay calm. Our teams are working around the clock to ensure there is no threat to civilian life,”
added a top CRPF officer overseeing the operation.
