Commission writes to Bengaluru Police Commissioner, urges swift action against derogatory social media posts following her remarks on the Renukaswamy case
Bengaluru: The Karnataka State Commission for Women has formally intervened in a growing case of online harassment against former MP and popular Kannada film actress Ramya. The Commission has addressed a letter to the Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru, demanding urgent investigation and legal action against those responsible for spreading abusive and defamatory content on social media.
Commission Cites Media Reports
The Women’s Commission cited reports from several mainstream newspapers and digital platforms dated July 27, 2025, that revealed how Ramya was maligned and insulted after she voiced her support for justice in the Renukaswamy murder case. These comments reportedly came from fans of actor Darshan, who is allegedly linked to the case.
“Such derogatory comments on social media affect the dignity and safety of women in public life. The Commission considers this matter seriously,”
stated the official communication from the Commission’s President.
Formal Letter Sent to Police Chief
The Commission's letter, dispatched from its official address at K.R.M.A., Bangalore, highlights the urgency and gravity of the issue and places the following demands before the Bengaluru Police Commissioner:
-
Immediate investigation into the origins of the derogatory messages
-
Steps to curb further circulation of such offensive content
-
Identification and prosecution of those responsible for online abuse
The Commission emphasised that timely action is crucial to safeguard the dignity of women, particularly those in public and political life.
Ramya Targeted for Demanding Justice
Ramya had publicly spoken out in favour of justice for Renukaswamy’s family, a move that apparently led to a wave of online abuse directed at her. Several of these messages were sexually abusive, threatening, and vulgar in nature.
In response, the actress-turned-politician has reportedly decided to file a formal complaint with the Cyber Crime Police. She has also shared screenshots of the abusive messages on her official handles, bringing attention to the cyberbullying culture that exists on social platforms.
Call for Swift Action Amid Silence from Police
So far, the Bengaluru Police have not made any official comment or announcement of action regarding this complaint. However, with the Women’s Commission now stepping in, there is growing pressure on authorities to act swiftly and send a strong message against online gender-based abuse.
“Online harassment is not just a digital crime—it reflects a deep-rooted misogyny in society. Strong institutional response is the only way to ensure accountability,”
added a senior official from the Women’s Commission on condition of anonymity.
Ongoing Concern Over the Safety of Women in Public Discourse
The incident has reignited discussions around the safety and freedom of expression for women in public life. Experts say that such abuse not only affects the individual’s mental health, but also creates an intimidating environment that discourages women from participating in public and political discourse.
The Karnataka State Commission for Women has made it clear that they will be closely monitoring the developments in this case and are prepared to escalate the matter to higher authorities if adequate action is not taken soon.
