80 students seek transfer as villagers oppose cooking eggs on the premises next to Veerabhadreshwara Swamy temple

Mandya: A controversy has erupted in Alakere village of Mandya district, where over 80 students of a government school have threatened to leave after the administration began cooking eggs as part of the midday meal scheme. The school, situated adjacent to the Veerabhadreshwara Swamy temple, has become the centre of a heated debate over religious sentiments and nutritional policies.

Eggs in Midday Meals Spark Religious Concerns

The Education Department's decision to provide eggs under the hot midday meal scheme has been met with strong resistance from local villagers. According to the residents, cooking eggs violates longstanding religious norms, as the temple premises prohibit meat and egg consumption.

“We are requesting that our children be given TC (Transfer Certificate) as eggs are being cooked in the school premises against our religious beliefs,”
said a concerned parent, echoing the sentiments of many in the village.

Out of the 120 students enrolled in the school, more than 80 students have refused to consume eggs. Several parents have already applied for TCs, indicating a mass exodus if the situation is not resolved.

School Defends Implementation of Government Policy

The school principal clarified that the school is merely implementing government policy, which aims to improve the nutrition levels of students through the inclusion of eggs in the meal.

“This is a government-mandated scheme. We request the parents to reconsider their decision in the interest of their children's education.”
The principal stated.

District Minister Intervenes, Promises Dialogue

In response to the growing tension, District In-charge Minister Cheluvaraya Swamy has intervened and promised to facilitate a resolution.

“A meeting will be held with officials of the Education Department, school principals, and parents to understand the concerns and resolve the issue amicably.”
The minister told the media.

The matter underscores the complex intersection between public health policy and local religious sentiments, highlighting the need for sensitive governance.

Local Traditions vs Nutritional Guidelines

The issue has sparked a broader debate on how government-run programs can or should accommodate cultural sensitivities. While the midday meal scheme has significantly improved school enrollment and nutrition, its implementation in certain areas remains fraught with resistance due to religious beliefs.

The final decision is expected to come following the outcome of the upcoming stakeholder meeting, which may determine whether alternative food options will be introduced or the current scheme modified for specific regions.
