Bengaluru: Actress and former Member of Parliament Ramya visited the Bangalore Police Commissioner’s office on Sunday to file a complaint against fans of actor Darshan, accusing them of sending obscene and abusive messages on social media.
Legal Action After Social Media Harassment
Ramya alleged that she was targeted online after she publicly voiced support for justice in the Renukaswamy murder case. Following her statements, Darshan's fans reportedly trolled and sent her indecent messages online.
The actress, accompanied by her lawyer, met the Bengaluru Police Commissioner and officially lodged a written complaint.
"There is no difference between the message Renukaswamy sent and the messages sent by Darshan's fans. It is this misogynistic mentality that fuels rape and violence against women in our society,"
— Actress Ramya
State Women's Commission Steps In
Taking serious note of the incident, the Karnataka State Commission for Women has also written to the Police Commissioner, urging swift action against those responsible for the online abuse.
Ramya Speaks Out Boldly
In a powerful statement to the media, Ramya highlighted how the abuse faced by female public figures reflects deeper societal issues.
"We celebrities always face trolling. But I have never experienced this level of harassment. If they can send such messages to me, what will ordinary girls face? This shouldn't be tolerated anymore. That's why I filed the complaint,"
— Ramya
She further added that she is determined to pursue legal action against those who degrade women on social platforms, and called for collective efforts to curb digital harassment.
Background
Ramya has recently been vocal about the need for justice in the murder of Renukaswamy, who was allegedly killed after sending objectionable messages to a woman linked to actor Darshan. Her stance sparked online backlash from a section of Darshan’s fanbase, prompting this legal move.
What Next?
The police have acknowledged the complaint and assured that necessary action will be taken after reviewing the messages. Legal proceedings may follow under sections of the IT Act and IPC related to online abuse, obscenity, and harassment.
